Tucked away in Galicia’s northwestern corner, this city quietly leans into its ancient past, inviting you to slow down and take it all in. We did just that.

The day began with a walk to Ponte Vella de Lugo from the drop-off point (Lugo City Hall).

We followed cobbled streets down toward the Roman Bridge. The walk down was rather steep and an invigorating walk which meant what goes down must go up! The bridge has this quiet stillness about it, with the river flowing gently beneath. We couldn’t linger for too long as we had our adventure planned out.

Lugo’s crowning glory is certainly the UNESCO Heritage Site of the Roman walls. These aren’t crumbling ruins hidden behind barriers. They’re perfectly preserved, and you can walk the full 2 km loop on top of them.

Accessing the Roman walls is accessible, there are three options dotted throughout the old town, they have a lift, ramp and stairs for all to enjoy the walls. Once on the path, the city spreads out around you, a mix of medieval rooftops, modern life, and centuries-old secrets.

Back in the old town, we stopped by the Museo Provincial de Lugo opposite the San Pedro Church. Entry was free and we would highly recommend a visit here. Inside, it’s a maze of Galician culture and Roman artefacts, mosaics, andsculptures, at one point we did feel like we were stepping into Hogwarts.

The rest of the day was spent getting lost in the narrow streets with tapas bars spilling out onto the streets which was booming with life.

Lugo’s market, known as the Mercado De Abastos, is the city’s beating heart in the mornings. Tucked just off the old town streets, it’s a vibrant mix of colour, noise, and fresh local produce. From just caught seafood to baskets of seasonal vegetables, artisan cheeses, and cured meats.

With Amy’s multiple allergies, it was not possible to try any of the Spanish cuisines, so we had taken some snacks with us. For those new to cruising, make sure to check before taking food off the ship in case there are tight restrictions on bringing food off at a particular destination.

If you have previously explored La Coruna, we would highly recommend a trip to Lugo, the old town felt authentic and had so much to explore.

We hope you’ve enjoyed reading our blog, to see more of our adventures follow us on Facebook.
